🌍 Handmade in Laos
The Story
Handmade by artisan weavers in Laos, this pillow cover showcases the ancient craft of indigo dyeing. The cotton is planted by hand, watered by monsoon rains, picked after eight months, ginned by hand, spun into yarn by hand, and woven on traditional wood and bamboo looms.
The indigo dye comes from the kharm plant and is made through a meticulous fermentation process kept in air tight jars at specific temperatures. This tradition is passed down through generations and is steeped in cultural significance. Each piece takes months to complete from cotton seed to finished textile.
The craft is a vanishing art form. This work provides fair trade employment for women in rural Lao villages, helping sustain traditional skills that are threatened by cheap factory imports.
